What Is Dungeons & Dragons?
Designed by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, Dungeons & Dragons, also known as D&D, is a fantasy table-top role-playing game, which was published in 1974 by Tactical Studies Rules, Inc. (TSR). It is a derivative of miniature war-games, with the rule-system being from the 1971 game, Chainmail.
D&D permits each player to form their own character instead of a pre-set one. Once formed, these characters embark on a fantasy voyage with imaginary ventures, overcoming obstacles, such as dilemmas, battles, and gathering treasures, along with other characters (players). A Dungeon Master (DM) attends as the game’s referee, assigning quests, telling stories, retaining the scenario of the game, all the while playing the role of residents in the fantasy world.
In 2004, D&D became the best-selling role-playing game in the United States, with almost 20,000,000 people playing it. It made more than $1,000,000,000 in revenue worldwide. With the release of the 5th edition of D&D, these numbers went up by 41% in 2017, and 52% in 2018.
D&D has become a significant part of modern pop-culture and has made its way into controversies with religious groups. D&D is commonly renowned as the beginning of the modern role-playing game industry.
What Is The Eldritch Blast?
Eldritch Blast is undeniably one of the finest damage-dealing cantrips in the game! It sends a beam of crackling energy at the targets, which will inflict a force-damage of 1D10 with no chance of prevention.
You can even shoot an additional beam at the fifth, eleventh, and seventeenth level, however, each beam will require its own 1D10 roll. Hence, why this cantrip is ranked as one of the finest warlock cantrips in the 5th edition of D&D.
Eldritch Blast has one purpose, and that is to inflict damage! However, bear in mind that each individual beam will require a particular target to be selected when you cast it. If your target dies amidst resolution, you do not get another chance to select another target for the remaining beams.

RANGE: 120 feet
COMPONENTS: Verbal, Somatic
DESCRIPTION: “A beam of crackling energy streaks toward a creature within range. Make a ranged spell attack against the target. On a hit, the target takes 1d10 damage.
The spell creates more than one beam when you reach higher levels: two beams at 5th level, three beams at 11th level, and four beams at 11th level. You can direct the beams at the same target or at different ones. Make a separate attack roll for each beam.”
When Should You Use It?
It’s obvious that the optimum time would be during combat, however, the frequency should be determined by your level and other abilities. Although, I would suggest that Eldritch Blast should be your primary source for damage before level 10.
Before level 10, there won’t be many options for a Warlock which will use a D10 to inflict damage, and you always want to inflict as much damage as you can, quickly. However, as soon as you begin to go beyond level 10, you wouldn’t have to rely much on the Eldritch Blast as there will be better spells, that can deal more damage.
- No materials required to cast the spell, and no concentration to resolve it.
- It is the most versatile damage-dealing spell and inflicts damage upon multiple opponents at once.
- It uses the second-highest die in the game, therefore, the probability of taking a portion out of the opponent’s hit-points is extraordinary.
- Your adversary has no chance of making a saving throw.
- It inflicts force-damage, and there aren’t many enemies which are resistant to it.
- It can inflict damage on a target 120 feet away without any saving throw.
As it deals force-damage, it won’t penetrate the armour of a Helmed Horror, which will force your team into finding a creative solution to it. Hence, this can be used by your Dungeon Master to exploit your flaw!
