Want to play League of Legends, but it won’t open? Well, here’s how you can fix that!
Some causes of the League of Legends, not opening can be; server Issues, internet connection issues, and third-party applications. If you’re faced with a server issue, then you’ll just have to wait for Riot Games to fix the issue. These types of issues get fixed fast, so there’s not much to worry about. The second one might seem like a simple one, but you might want to check if it’s your internet connection that’s causing the issue.
If you’re facing tremendous lag, then you can use a tool called Lag Report that should identify any connection issues affecting your PC, as well as that of your ISP in your local area.
League of Legends still won’t open? Well, there are a few more resolutions that you can attempt:
1. FIREWALL
Although normally, firewalls would automatically recognize League of Legends with its growing popularity, it still is a good idea to check your firewall’s settings.
You can do this;
- Update your firewall and antivirus software. If you’re using outdated definitions, they might not recognize your League of Legends client.
You can temporarily disable your computer’s firewall by doing this;
- Switch your firewall off.
- Try connecting to League of Legends. If it won’t launch, then your firewall likely isn’t the source of the problem. If it does, however, then it’s probable that this is causing the issue.
- Re-enable your firewall.
- Add a program exception manually. The exact method for this varies by the exact type of firewall you use; often, it’s as simple as checking the League of Legends box in your settings.
- Alternatively, you might need to add LeagueClient.exe to your exceptions list.
2. DNS SETTINGS
Most players will use their ISP’s DNS settings to connect to the internet. However, in certain circumstances, they may use sub-optimal settings, which can result in your League of Legends launcher not opening, as well as lagging and patching issues.
To fix that, do this;
- FOR WINDOWS:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Network and Internet.
- Click Network and Sharing Center.
- Click Change Adapter Settings.
- Right-click on the network adapter in use, and click on Properties.
- Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click on Properties.
- Check the Use the following DNS server addresses box. Remember to note down your current address in case you need to revert.
- After that;
- In the Preferred DNS Server box, input 8.8.8.8.
- In the Alternate DNS Server box, input 8.8.4.4.
- Click OK.
- Click on the Windows Start menu. Go to All Programs > Accessories. Then, right-click on Command Prompt and click Run As Administrator.
- Type ipconfig/flushdns and press ENTER.
- Restart your PC.
- FOR MAC:
- Open System Preferences.
- Select Network.
- Click on your active connection, then click Advanced.
- Click on the DNS tab.
- Remember to note down your current address in case you need to revert.
- Next;
- In the first row, input 8.8.8.8.
- In the second row, input 8.8.4.4.
- Click Okay, and then click Apply to finish.
3. PACKET BUFFERING
If you use streaming applications, like Spotify, websites like YouTube and Twitch, torrenting programs, active downloads, and Skype; you might want to turn them off, as they could be the reason why you’re suffering from packet buffering.
4. PACKET LOSS
This may simply mean that you’re trying to connect at a busy time, when the bandwidth may be restricted for all users. However, it may indicate issues with your connection. You might want to contact your ISP to discuss the problem.

You can attempt the resolutions mentioned below;
- Re-install your game – it may seem counter-intuitive, but it might be the easiest way to fix your problem.
6. ADMINISTRATOR PERMISSIONS
In some instances (particularly if you’re playing on a Mac), League of Legends won’t open if you don’t open the file with administrator permissions. For Windows, just right-click on the League of Legends shortcut, and hit Run As Administrator.
If you’re on a Mac, do the following steps;
- Head over to System Preferences, then double-click on Users & Groups.
- Select your account from the left pane, and check if you’re listed as an Admin. If not, do this;
- Click the lock icon.
- Log in with an administrator account when the popup appears.
- Check the Allow user to administer this computer box.
- Relaunch League of Legends.
On Mac, you can also modify permissions for files or folders, which may cause issues such as your League client, not opening, or even causing the initial installation to fail.
To do this;
- Find the location where League of Legends is installed on your Mac.
- Open the Info window, then expand the Sharing & Permissions section.
- Check whether you can Read & Write in the Privilege column. If not, then edit the settings by clicking on the lock icon. Select Read & Write from the dropdown menu that appears in the Privilege column next to your account.
If you’re still facing problems after re-installing the game on Windows, you might want to re-install it as an administrator.
7. USE THE HEXPATCH REPAIR TOOL:
This is an automated trouble-shooter designed by Riot Games, so you may want to use this if all else fails.
If you are still unable to open League of Legends, you may want to restart your computer – which you may have done already.
