Another reason for more RAM consumption are website developers, who inject the browser with third-party content, which is mostly futile. Therefore, even though we’re the ones operating the browser, it has to function how the website developers want it to. For instance, ads can overflow the browser with unnecessary cache, which eventually leads to more RAM consumption.
Furthermore, there will always be a trade-off between a browse’s functionality and your computer’s memory. Google Chrome stores information, as does every other program – this makes it secure and convenient for the consumer (you). You can make the browser use less RAM by having it store less information, however, it will make it slower and any data lost will have to be restored.
Generally, Google Chrome moves with more memory consumption for a more fluent and frictionless operation. For instance, it will maintain any tabs that you had opened if Google Chrome crashes, however, if the memory is running low, it will discard those tabs, hence, losing data.
Moreover, when it comes to convenience, Google Chrome has a pre-rendering feature. It means that when you search for something online, Google Chrome predicts web-pages which you might visit and renders some of their components before you even visit them – this makes browsing faster, but is intense on your RAM.
If you’re noticing using more RAM than usual, there’s also a chance that your computer might be affected with a malware or virus. If that’s the case, your computer will become sluggish even if you have adequate RAM.
In 2019, almost every browser is consuming significantly more RAM than it was 10 years ago, which would make sense since the internet has become way more sophisticated since then. It isn’t something to worry about if Google Chrome is using 1 GB of your computer’s RAM. You don’t need un-used RAM until you use it!
